The tower’s architect was Raymond Charles Péré, a French-born architectand one of the leading figures of his time. In designing the structure, Péré successfully blended the decorative sensibilities of Ottoman architecture with the Western influences of the era. For this reason, the tower is considered one of the finest examples of an East-West synthesis from an aesthetic perspective. The tower stands 25 meters tall and consists of four stories. The cut stones used in its body lend the structure both strength and elegance.

One of the most striking features of the Clock Tower is the clock mechanism on it. The tower’s clocks were sent as a gift to Sultan Abdülhamid II by German Emperor Wilhelm II. The mechanism operated flawlessly for many years and became an integral part of the daily lives of the people of Izmir.
